If I may just ask:

Band photography is hard to get into. I know that! How am I meant to get a band to come to me and say "hey, can you shoot us?" when I have (1) never photographed a gig before and (2) could end up with nothing decent at the end of the night to give them.

I've read so much on band photography and I've asked a band if they would be okay with me shooting their gig. They, of course, said yes and I offered them copies (for their MySpace) in return for putting up with a flash in their face (of course I'll be courteous if a flash is necessary). How am I meant to say “I have no portfolio to show you my work but will you pay me to shoot your gig? I might not get any good shots at all, but oh well.”

I have no portfolio, no previous clients to back my work...nothing! How am I meant to start off and expect something in return from the bands when I am giving them mediocre/practice photos?
